Sim Juha is an artist who centers the poppy flower as a primary motif, continuing a body of work that offers comfort to the emotions and inner lives of contemporary individuals. His paintings go beyond the simple depiction of nature, focusing instead on visually expressing symbolic themes such as “consolation,” “comfort,” and “dreamlike reverie.”
Working with traditional East Asian materials—ink (meok) and mineral pigments (bunchae)—the artist reinterprets these mediums through a modern sensibility. In particular, he builds deep, layered dark backgrounds by repeatedly applying ink, then scatters mineral pigments across the surface to create compositions where chance and intention coexist. This technique produces vivid colors and unpredictable effects that are difficult to achieve with tube paints, enhancing the immersive quality of his work through striking contrasts.
Additionally, he incorporates gold and silver powders, along with the traditional brush technique of jungbong (centered brushstroke), to bring both brilliance and delicacy to the surface. Through this process, he continues to develop a unique painterly language in which tradition and contemporary aesthetics harmoniously coexist.
